All about esophageal reflux in infants

E
very parent knows that it is very normal baby spit up or even vomit. But what few mothers know is that this regurgitation or vomiting may have a definite cause is called gastroesophageal reflux. Usually gastroesophageal reflux occurs in the first year of life babies. But there is a difference between the normal esophageal reflux disease and gastroesophageal reflux.

In the case of reflux disease, gastro-esophageal reflux is caused by the defect or malfunction of a valve located at the entrance of the stomach, called the cardia. All people have this valve. What happens is that after the passage of food this valve should be closed, preventing the food with gastric juice back into the esophagus and reaches the mouth.

In other words, it can happen to the baby or be born with a problem that valve or will not perform optimally. Then, after the passage of food the valve opens with ease, even after the baby is fed and satisfied.

The first signs of reflux is the act of baby bed or begin to feel pressure in the abdomen, start coughing and coughing as a result of vomiting appears. That act, the turn of the contents of the stomach is called gastroesophageal reflux.

But as we said at the beginning of this post, not all vomiting that can be described as gastro-esophageal reflux. You're going to differentiate the normal reflux gastroesophageal reflux by the amount of all come out, as in the case of reflux is very greater than that of a mild reflux naturall. In addition, it will have a spasm in the muscles of the abdomen.

So we have two types of gastro esophageal reflux:
1 - The first is called reflux normal. It happens a lot in healthy infants and is characterized by a mild vomiting after feeding. It is by the air intake during the sucking of the bottle or breast. This is why it's important to burp after eating to release the air and mame always in a position that does not suck air, the mouth should involve all the nipple of the bottle or breast. It is also interesting you leave it standing for 30 minutes before the air is expelled naturally and do not take food together.

2 - Have pathological reflux is accompanied by weight gain, loss of appetite, lack of time to breathe and cry for no apparent reason. These symptoms are a result of inflammation of the esophagus caused by acid from the stomach comes into contact with the esophagus at the time that there is vomiting.

The most important thing is that gastroesophageal reflux improves over time. That is, with almost one year of age your baby will no longer have any symptoms and live a life free from the evils of reflux. That is why many pediatricians characterize gastroesophageal reflux as just a phase.
