Listening to music referring to cannabis would risk consumer
S
tudents listen to music referring to cannabis could run twice as likely to consume the substance than those who do not listen to such music, according to a study by researchers at the American University in Pittsburgh and published on the website of the journal Addiction. Researchers have studied the behavior of some 959 students. They revealed that those who consume more marijuana were not heavy drinkers. They concluded the existence of a link between words referring to cannabis and the use of this substance.
The researchers analyzed the musical tastes of students, and have sifted through the some 794 songs best sales years 2005, 2006 and 2007, based on figures from U.S. magazine Billboard.
They determined that average participant listens more than twenty hours of music per week (21.8 hours exactly), and is exposed to forty references to cannabis daily. 12% of students say they are regular users of cannabis, and 32% have ever used.
"It seems that exposure to music evoking cannabis entails risks of consuming the substance, but it is possible that people smoke hashish looking especially to listen to music evoking cannabis," said Brian Primack, l one of the authors of the study.
